Woodville Wanderer-Cancer Society of Hawke

Event Notice: Steam Train Adventure with the Cancer Society of Hawke's Bay and Steam Incorporated

Saturday, 15th February 2025 – All aboard for a grand day out! Join the Cancer Society of Hawke's Bay and Steam Incorporated as we embark on a spectacular steam train journey from Napier to Waipukurau, hauled by the iconic steam locomotive Ja 1271. This memorable trip will feature our fleet of steel passenger cars, including the open-viewing car, offering stunning views along the way.

Journey Highlights:
Departing Napier: Escape the Art Deco buzz of Napier and head south, picking up passengers in Hastings before making our way over the scenic Opapa Bank, with its steady climb toward the quaint towns of Otane and Waipawa.
Arriving in Waipukurau: Upon reaching the largest town in Central Hawke’s Bay, the locomotive will take a well-earned rest, and you have the option to disembark and explore all that Waipukurau has to offer during its Art Deco Market Day.
Waipukurau Market Day:
The town will be transformed back to the Art Deco era, with nearly 100 New Zealand-made craft, produce, artisan stalls, food trucks, live music, and classic cars. Take your time to wander, or make the most of exclusive experiences like an optional High Tea or a guided Pukekaihau Pā Site Tour (additional charges apply).

Espresso Loco High Tea – Limited to 60 people, enjoy a delicious spread of sweet and savoury treats on the historic Waipukurau Train Station platform. A vintage Waipukurau Fire Engine will transport you to and from the Central Hawkes Bay Art Deco Farmers Market.
Pukekaihau Pā Site Tour – A special guided walking tour of the Pukekaihau Pā Site, offering insight into the history of Tamatea, the people of Central Hawke’s Bay, and the region’s rich cultural heritage. The tour lasts 45-60 minutes, including a short walk to the Pā site lookout with stunning views over Waipukurau.
