Opoutama Beach, or Blue Bay as it's often called, is a freedom camping spot on the Mahia Peninsula. The beach is a white sandy one, safe for swimming, relaxing, picnics, walking and surfing if the conditions are right. At certain times of the year, weather permitting, it is possible to observe dolphins frolicking in the surf. There are public toilets at the main parking area and multiple small parking areas along the beach.
Only self-contained vehicles are permitted here.
To reach Opoutama Beach take SH 2 heading towards Gisborne. At Nuhaka, continue straight ahead towards Opoutama and Mahia. Just over the railway lines turn right. This will take you to the beach access.
