The Maungawhio Lagoon joins the sea at Oraka Beach, and surfcasting and spinning will catch the odd kahawai. On light tackle you can have quite a lot of fun for a while.
From Wairoa, take State Highway 2 towards Gisborne. At Nūhaka, continue straight ahead towards Māhia. At Māhia follow Ormond Drive and then continue straight onto Māhia East Coast Road. Turn left onto Oraka Road
