This is a very popular beach when the fish are running and it is easily accessible. The best part about fishing Whakakī is that you can cast a line almost anywhere with a pretty good chance of success. It’s not uncommon for 10kg plus snapper to be caught as well as all sizes right down to school snapper.Whakakī fishes better when the water is a little rough but still clean.
This beach is not safe for swimming.
From Wairoa, head towards Gisborne on SH2 for approximately 21kms. Then turn right (with caution) onto Whakakī Beach Road.
